We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Vivolution over the past five years. Throughout this time their support and experience has been crucial to not only helping to develop our software product but also providing management and investment support which has been vital to our business success. We feel like they have truly been part of our team as we have grown from an idea to a business expanding globally with clients in India and the US.

Background

Your eyes, your sight – it’s how you interact with the world and others. But often access to eye care is dependent on proximity to an optometrist and the specialist equipment they use.

Not any more...

IbisVision, the brainchild of Consultant Eye Surgeon Blair Donaldson, is disrupting the healthtech and optometry market with a revolutionary solution that’s making eye care more accessible for everyone over a simple online connection. From the elderly to the less abled members of society to those living in

remote locations, IbisVision aims to improve access to eye care for everyone.

Approach

IbisVision has created a solution that solves the challenges of the brick-and-mortar optometrist. For people unable to access a traditional optometrist, such as those in care homes or with travel limitations, and those uncomfortable with invasive eyecare procedures, the platform allows tests to take place over a standard computer link. It also provides a wealth of benefits for the optometrist: from the ability to reach more customers, to reducing the amount of expensive hardware they require, to freeing up valuable retail space.

The initial concept was shaped through working with early adopters, and gathering feedback to further improve the product. The end result is a user-friendly, remote SaaS model which includes eye tests such as colour, visual field, visual acuity and the amsler test, and allows for measurements to be completed via a computer or laptop no matter where the patient is.

Importantly IbisVision is central in solving the challenges of COVID-19: by providing cloud-based and remotely hosted software, it allows for non-contact examinations where limitations on consultant/patient proximity are in place. IbisVision is now reaching customers through a variety of channels, from optometrists in the UK to health kiosks in India and the US.

Impact

“If we get it right it could be game changing"

The impact of IbisVision goes beyond the eyecare industry as the remote eye tests can help tackle governmental challenges, such as the reduction in carbon produced and net zero carbon footprint can be tackled by the SaaS model. In addition to this, healthy ageing can be improved due to the wider accessibility of eyecare for a wider section of society.

"I think that the testing method and the software has numerous applications and has the potential benefit over other traditional methods of visual field testing"

  • Simon Berry - Simon Berry Optometrists

"The product brings a new dimension to market offered alternatives. It provides better clinical information, as the patient has to show they have seen the stimuli which helps reduce false negatives/positives as well as no head or chin restraint".

Journey So Far

Whether advising on growth strategy, providing technical support and know how through VivoTech, investment guidance and structuring through VivoVentures, or even providing office space and introductions through VivoStudios and VivoConnect , Vivolution has always been at IbisVision’s side.

IbisVision has gained a combination of investment and grant funding through Innovate UK, SBRI, and SIB to the value of £2 million which has been crucial in supporting the growth of the business. In 2013, with the help of Vivolution, IbisVision won the Scottish Edge business award. Impressively, the business has recently attracted international investment through Compiler Venture Capital, allowing it to begin expansion into international markets.

What's Next

IbisVision is planning a further fund raise to help it expand into a mix of sectors including clinics, high streets, train stations, shopping malls, and the corporate insured market, across the UK and in international markets. Operationally, IbisVision wants to dominate the market through expanding remote testing capabilities and for this reason has taken on its own Head of Development to lead on this strategy.
